Janis Joplin (born January 19, 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas and died October 4, 1970 in Los Angeles) is an American singer.
Nicknamed the "Cosmic Mama" or "Pearl", she first distinguished herself in the late 1960s as a singer with the psychedelic acid rock group Big Brother and the Holding Company and later as a solo artist with her backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band.
