Jean Tenenbaum, known as Jean Ferrat, born on 26 December 1930 in Vaucresson (Seine-et-Oise) and died on 13 March 2010 in Aubenas (Ardèche), is a French singer-songwriter.
Author of songs with lyrics, he alternates during his career between sentimental songs, poetic songs and committed songs and often struggles to leave with censorship. Known for his talent as a melodist, he set to music and popularized many of Louis Aragon's poems with his approval.
Faithful, throughout his life, to his communist ideals, he nevertheless maintained his freedom vis-à-vis the French Communist Party, of which he had always said he was not a member, not hesitating to stand out on different subjects.
Although not very present in the media and despite his retirement from the scene at the age of forty-two, this ardent defender of French song has enjoyed great critical and popular success. Appreciated by a wide audience, it is considered, like Ferré, Brassens and Brel, as one of the greats of French song.
