Keith Richards built his notoriety on his characteristic guitar playing (using open G tuning, removing the 6th string from the instrument), which made him a legendary inventor of riffs, on the large number of international hits he composed with Mick Jagger (14 of the duo's songs are included in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest songs of all time, which also ranks him 4th best guitarist of all time), as well as his eventful life, his many problems with the judicial system in several countries due to his heroin addiction in the 1970s. He sums up his life in his autobiography Life published in 2010, which was a big hit in bookstores and where he says "I will retire when I've broken my pipe". After a career spanning more than 55 years, the Stones, all in their sixties, continue to perform successfully on stage and around the world in 2010 and show no intention of ending their band.
