Barbara (or Barbara Brodi in her early days), who was born Monique Andrée Serf on 9 June 1930 in the 17th arrondissement of Paris and died on 24 November 1997 at the American Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine), is a French singer-songwriter.
Her committed poetry, the melodic beauty of her compositions and the deep emotion emanating from her voice ensured her a loyal audience for forty years. Many of his songs have become classics of French chanson, including Une petite cantata, Dis, quand reviendras-tu ?, Nantes, Göttingen, La Dame brune, L'Aigle noir, Marienbad and Ma plus belle histoire d'amour.
Barbara has appeared in three films for the cinema and in two musicals on stage: Madame in 1970 and Lily passion (with Gérard Depardieu) in 1985.
Since 2010, the Prix Barbara has been awarded every year to a young French-speaking singer.
